Nail Technician News: What Causes Brittle Nails?
Many people on nail courses as well as others throughout the world may be interested to know why their nails become brittle. Brittle nail syndrome, as the name suggests, is characterised by dry, splitting or cracking nails!
Not everyone has brittle nail syndrome. As we grow older, however, the brittleness of your nails becomes more and more apparent. As we age our nails also tend to reach an overall weaker state.
The brittle nail syndrome is caused by all or some of a number of different experiences:-
- Lack of moisture
- Lack of Zinc
- Lack of Iron
- Lack of protein
- Trauma
- Bad reaction to nail polish
Unlikely:-
- Hepatitis
- Heart Disease
- Jaundice
If any doubt arises over any nail conditions you may have, it is highly recommended to contact a qualified doctor or your local GP.
How to stop brittle nails?
After speaking with your GP to gain professional advice, he may have suggested you use follow one or more of the following common steps to reach a resolution:-
- Vitamin Supplements
- Moisturisers (Some nail polishes include moisturising or vitamin enriching properties)
- Wear gloves when dealing with any chemicals/cleaning products.
- Don’t wear nail polish for 3 months or so and see if your nails are still brittle.
Of course, speaking with a GP is extremely useful when in doubt. Generally nail courses teach basic physiology and anatomy, health and safety and outline some of the most common disorders of the skin and nail therapists should look out for.
